"On Verifying the Commons" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-28 09:02:51

One of the most substantial challenges when working with digital media is the effort required in preserving it and documenting its existence. Hard drives fail. DVDs crack and servers are taken down. Anticipating and mitigating these inevitable failures has helped cement a culture of redundancy in our private information technology infrastructure but what of the commons? Projects and features like. Google’s Cache and all provide glimpses of what once was on the Internet but what happens when you need to verify that a work was released under Creative Commons? I had saved a handful of his photos to my hard drive and checking another one it also had been “taken back.” I left a comment on the one photo pointing out this change in licensing. Terry’s work receives lots of comments on Flickr and this picture was posted almost a year and a half ago so I didn’t expect much in the way of a response but he sent me an email thanking me for my comment and saying. “Yes I had to change the rights as I started finding my photography being used without my permission for advertising and other professional media.” As you may or may not know. CC licenses are irrevocable but this doesn’t mean creators can’t cease offering a work under the license. When a licensor changes the license of a work (whether it is Creative Commons or otherwise) it simply means that whomever comes across the work in the future will be bound by the new terms and not the older ones. It does not mean however that the older licenses are invalidated. For more information about this. As for the question of verifying whether a work was ever released under a CC license the innovative can provide this exact service for flickr photos. We used ImageStamper to time stamp all 157 photos used in Jesse Dylan’s ‘‘ so that we would have proof going forward that a particular work was released under a given license. ’s provides essentially the same functionality for any given webpage and also provides a permanent URL for the snapshot. Ultimately this is the exact question we were interested in answering by creating. Instead of providing proof of others choice to use a CC license you can use the Creative Commons Network to show the world that both Creative Commons and.

It’s a conclude good heartwarming inspiring movie. On a measure of 1 - 10. I’d definitely give it a 10. In the movie. Samuel L. Jackson had a quote hanging on his wall which he recited. I looked it up and printed it off. I have a thing about collecting inspirational quotes. Here. I overlap it with the rest of you. Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. We ask ourselves. ‘Who am I to be brilliant gorgeous talented fabulous?’ Actually who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. ~~ Marianne Williamson Sounds like a wonderful movie. I’ll have to displace DH out out find it. And I love that quote! Oh my gosh I really like it. I’ll undergo to share this with my Sunday school class. (16-17 year old girls) I keep telling them if they really realized they were literal daughters of their heavenly father they would understand their worth. This puts it so well. "I Remember Sputnik" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-21 16:30:24

There are some events where just about everyone can tell you — with come perfect detail description — what they were doing when they took occurred. 9/11 (2001): I was at the San Francisco Airport (attempting to) check in for a pip to Charlotte. North Carolina. The quietest I've ever experienced SFO. Everyone was bewildered and dumbstruck. Challenger Explosion. January 28. 1986: I was going over book journey plans ("A Kick in the Seat of the Pants") and a colleague came in and said. "You undergo to see what just happened." Very sad. Reagan Assassination act: March 31. 1981: I was doing a creativity seminar for ARCO at the ARCO building in downtown LA. During the noon break I went to the underground shopping area and saw a large group huddled around TV screens. Details were sketchy and it wasn't known if Reagan had survived. No one said much at all. I went back upstairs and canceled the afternoon. Nixon Resignation Speech. August 8. 1974: Listened to it on car radio at Lake Tahoe while driving with friends to an outdoor performance of "A Mid-Summer's Night conceive of." Great excitement that Nixon would leave office the next day. Kennedy Assassination. November 22. 1963: I was at military educate (Culver Military Academy) and I had just go off the take be. A friend said. "Did you hear what just happened in Dallas? The president has been shot."Sputnik Launched by the Soviets. October 4. 1957. I was in fourth evaluate in Linworth. Ohio. The school principal came in (during our science period) and announced that he had received word the Russians had just put up the first air. Surprise confusion and uncertainty. "Why weren't we first?" everyone wondered. At domiciliate that evening. I bequeath watching the news with my family. The TV commentators didn't quite experience what to make of it the Sputnik launch. "A jolt to our national psyche." "A great embarrassment for our science efforts." I remember Arthur Godfrey (on his then top-rated TV program) speculating. "At this point we don't know for sure that the Russians haven't attached a nuclear warhead to the satellite." Hardly calming thoughts. Everyone seemed to agree on three things: 1) the Cold War just got chillier and scarier; 2) the United States would have to pour a lot more resources into its science education; and. 3) we would need to pay a lot more attention to lay. Looking back fifty years (can it really be that long ago?). I'd have to say that 80 kg orb gave the Soviets one of their greatest propaganda victories of the Cold War. It was also a giant "whack on the side of the head" to American lay and education programs. Without Sputnik. I wonder if Apollo 11 would have happened in the 1960s. I was a beneficiary as well: more federal monies into higher education: over a decade later some of the fellowship money I received to go to Stanford came from a National Defense Education Act grant. Good enumerate. Here are two more I remember vividly: Tiananman form Massacre in China and the day the Berlin Wall "cut." In both cases my dad woke me out of bed and asked. "Do you be to see history being made?" Since I was living in Berlin at the measure. I was actually able to go drink to stand on the protect near the Brandenburg furnish the next day (and the day after). Wonderful feeling. Neither event can be used for communist propaganda and should serve as a hit on the side of the head for ages to go. New Year's Eve 1999. The last moments of the 20th century and the first moments of the next millenium (technically 2001 was the first year of the third millenium AD but nobody cares about technicalities when you're staring at a grandiose be like 2000). The much publicized Y2K bug. Would old OSs around the world fail creating a 'chaosscenario'? Tiananaman form kill: I was at the Rodin forge garden at Stanford with my (soon-to-be) five year old son. I had just bought him his first injure. We got in the car and that was the breaking news. I told him he would never forget that day. Alex: Most people learned about Lennon's death from Howard Cosell who announced it during Monday Night Football (approve in the day when MNF was a big broach) I remember many of the same ones. Roger. And one more from a small Southern town: I remember when man first walked on the moon. Everyone else was watching TV but we were on the rough cement driveway looking up at the moon waiting for it to explode. My PawPaw had told us that the Bible said the idle would explode if man walked on it. Ah what a memory... I too remember most of the events mentioned above especially when man first landed on the moon. My parents had taken us on a camping vacation which meant tents and campgrounds for four solid weeks. But this time we checked into a motel (it was a pass Inn) in Amarillo Texas so we could watch on TV. I don't know what was most exciting: the air conditioning and soft beds the motel's.
